Within the city, there are seven seasides perfect for Barcelona beach activities, 4.5 km of beaches in total. The Barceloneta and Sant Sebastia coasts are the most extended (1,100 meters each), the oldest and the most visited beaches in Barcelona. They have been often included in top ratings as the best European beaches.
On the other side, behind the Olympic Port, there is a sequence of other city coasts. There are the Nova Icaria, the Bogatell, the Mar Bella, the Nova Mar Bella and the Llevant. They were made after coastline reconstruction on the eve of the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. It is hard to imagine that before that, the town had been actually cut off from the sea with lines of factories, warehouses and docks. It is amazing that beaches are mostly of the loose damp sand. The sand is supplied here even as far as from Morocco.
